Would you like to be part of Vital Energi’s Strategy of Growth? If so, we are looking for a Senior and Principal Electrical Design Engineers to join our growing Project Development team. This role could be based at our head office in Blackburn, our Glasgow office or London office; we are flexible on location. This is an excellent opportunity to run and build your own projects.

About the Role

Step into a role where your electrical engineering expertise genuinely shapes the built environment. Reporting to a Principal Engineer or Design Manager, you’ll take the lead on a diverse mix of industrial, commercial, and public‑sector projects, from early concept development right through to detailed design. You’ll influence pre‑construction strategies, review third‑party designs, and play a key part in producing PCSAs and investment‑grade proposals that drive major decisions.

You’ll join a collaborative team of electrical engineers, designing everything from electrical plant layouts and switch rooms to substations, cable sizing, lighting systems, containment, and wider building services. If you bring HV design experience, even better; it’s a strong advantage.

Key Duties:

  • Electrical design work during pre-construction stages and during project delivery as required by the department’s workload.
  • Responsible for the timely execution of electrical design deliverables on tender/bid projects.
  • Day-to-day decision making on tenders and projects. Provides advice to internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Takes a holistic view in the selection and application of engineering concepts and solutions.
  • Represent Vital Energi at technical meetings with customers, professional teams and contractor teams.
  • Ensure engineering calculations and drawings meet required robust industry and legal standards.
  • Survey and report on existing electrical installations.
  • Work within multi-disciplinary work winning teams to deliver technically compliant tenders.
  • Lead on the coordination of engineering services.
  • Engage equipment vendor supply chain to ensure electrical equipment selections are valid technically, specification compliant, value for money and available within programme.
  • Have an awareness of cost implications within design.
  • Assist with effectively dealing with design issues and minimising their impact.
  • Ability to design systems in the form of calculations, equipment selection and process operation.
  • Liaising with external designers, customers and Vital Energi’s in-house project teams.
  • Compliance with CDM requirements and our in-house design processes.
  • Ability to design systems in the form of schematics, calculations, equipment selection, detailed drawings and provide inputs for control operating strategies.
  • Ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice with company procedures.

Skills/Experience

The successful candidates will ideally be qualified at degree level or similar (HNC/HND), with a minimum of circa 3 to 5 years’ relevant experience working for a consultancy or a contractor. The individuals will have:

  • Knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel).
  • Experience using Trimble ProDesign (Amtech).
  • Good understanding of the latest edition of the IET Wiring Regulation.
  • Sound knowledge of electrical building services design.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and work to deadlines.
  • Sound knowledge & working application of key health and safety issues and legislation.
  • Chairing/facilitation of meeting skills.
