Our client, a well-established, highly respected financial services organisation with many decades of success in the UK market, is currently in the midst of a significant finance transformation - evolving their systems, accounting infrastructure and reporting capabilities to meet the demands of a modern, complex and highly regulated environment. This is a genuinely senior and influential role within a business that takes both its technical standards and its people seriously.
The successful candidate will be an expert in ledger integrity, accounting architecture and the operational implementation of complex accounting requirements. You'll be the organisation's go-to subject matter expert, sitting at the intersection of technical accounting standards, commercial activity and operational finance delivery. It's a role that demands breadth and depth in equal measure, and real ability to lead through complexity and ambiguity.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Owning the operational integrity of the general ledger and associated accounting infrastructure, ensuring all postings, journals and movements are complete, accurate and properly evidenced.
- Governing finance taxonomies including Chart of Accounts, Profit and Cost Centres, Units of Account, Financial Dimensions and Reporting Hierarchies.
- Leading technical accounting assessments for new business initiatives, products, transactions and strategic projects - preparing and reviewing accounting papers, opinions and audit support documentation.
- Providing subject matter expertise across IFRS 17, IFRS 9, IFRS 15 and UK GAAP, and obtaining stakeholder and audit buy-in for proposed accounting treatments.
- Leading the operational implementation of accounting policy and reporting changes, working closely with Technology, Data, Actuarial and Change teams.
- Acting as the accounting lead on complex finance transformation programmes, ensuring impacts are fully understood across upstream and downstream systems.
- Driving improvements in reporting outputs, data quality, reconciliation and data lineage - building more reliable, transparent and automated financial information.
- Managing and developing a small specialist team, setting clear priorities and building technical capability across the function.
- Influencing senior stakeholders across Finance, Actuarial, Technology, Change, Operations and Risk without direct authority.
What We’re Looking For
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with significant experience in financial accounting, technical accounting, financial control or ledger accounting environments.
- Insurance sector experience is a must.
- IFRS 17 experience is required.
- Deep knowledge of double-entry bookkeeping, general ledger operations and financial control principles.
- Strong technical accounting capability across IFRS 17 and IFRS 9, with experience producing technical accounting papers and securing audit or governance approval.
- Experience operating within complex, multi-system finance architectures involving multiple data feeds and source systems.
- Demonstrated ability to implement accounting change through finance systems and operational processes.
- Proven people management experience, with the ability to lead through change and develop a high-performing team.
- Strong communication and influencing skills - able to translate complex technical concepts into clear business outcomes for non-finance audiences.
