Located in the heart of Providence, Rhode Island, Manchester Street Station is nestled on 12 acres in the Historic Downtown district near the Providence River. The plant produces enough electricity to power about 112,000 homes, using natural gas as its primary fuel with fuel oil as a secondary.
Manchester Street Station is seeking an energetic, self‑motivated Maintenance Technician II to perform building and ground maintenance services. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, and is represented by UWUA, Local 310. Rate $46.00.
Job Functions- Assisting and advising operators and supervisors on the status of all mechanical equipment.
- Perform mechanical repairs on all station equipment such as pumps, valves, condensers, turbines, etc.
- Perform basic pipefitting, welding and cutting operations and metal fabrication.
- Operate mobile and hoisting equipment.
- Troubleshoot and correct mechanical problems on power plant equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance on all station equipment.
- Perform routine housekeeping duties to maintain work area and ensure a safe, clean work environment.
- Use Maintenance reporting system to record time and material use, problems identified and corrected, and further actions required; provide complete history of maintenance on equipment.
- Wear personal protective equipment to minimize exposure to workplace hazards at all times.
- Strive to prevent any environmental impacts in all work performed.
- Complete the Automatic Progression Program within the required intervals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Compliance with station procedures and policies and attending mandatory training when scheduled by supervisor.
- Does not handle hazardous waste prior to attending initial hazardous waste training unless under the direct guidance of immediate supervisor.
- A High School diploma or GED is required.
- Previous work experience (two or more years) in an industrial environment demonstrating responsibility for machinery maintenance and troubleshooting of mechanical systems equipment.
- Possess basic math skills, must be able to understand and perform mathematical computation, including algebra and basic trigonometry at a high school graduate level.
- A valid driver’s license and other licenses are required to operate equipment associated with the job.
- Must obtain state hoisting license within 6 months.
- Must pass the POSS/MASS pre‑employment test.
- Demonstrate ability to use tools and equipment required in mechanical trades.
- Demonstrate ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English at high school graduate level.
- Must be able to obtain DOT Medical Card within 6 months of employment.
- Overtime will be required.
- The successful candidate must be able and willing to work overtime which can be either scheduled or call‑in and be contactable by telephone.
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment.
- Will be required to work in and around the following 76-100% of the time: cold, confined spaces, dust, grease, oil, energized wires, high heat, operating machinery, pressurized lines and valves.
- Work in vicinity of ash, oils, fumes, dust and toxic chemicals in a power plant environment.
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in hot and cold temperature extremes and in inclement weather.
- Must possess the ability to work on ladders, scaffolding and at heights needed to service plant equipment.
- Climb, balance, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl in tight spaces and to push, pull, grasp and lift parts and equipment.
- Work amid noise and vibration.
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment to include foot protection and respiratory gear required in a power plant environment to protect from plant hazards.
- Overall physical strength is required for occasional heavy‑duty tool usage and occasional heavy lifting up to 75 lbs.
- Must have sufficient physical endurance for repetitive tasks.
- Ability to work in confined areas.
- Ability to operate and clearly communicate on public announcement systems/radios.
- Ability to work with high level of manual dexterity and average levels of sight and hearing.
- Must be able to work on open grated floors, climb stairs and work in extreme weather (hot and/or cold weather) conditions in an outdoor environment.
