School Sports Youth Worker (full time, temporary)

Wigan
£475 - £550 per week PAYE (salary is depending on experience and/or qualifications)
Start date: November 2026

The School and Role

A specialist school in Wigan is looking for an enthusiastic and resilient School Sports Youth Worker to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with a background in sports coaching, youth work, PE, mentoring or community programmes who wants to take their experience into an education setting. You’ll use sport and physical activity to help young people build confidence, develop positive relationships, improve emotional regulation and re-engage with education.

Working alongside teachers and support staff, you’ll support pupils both in and outside the classroom, helping them manage challenges, develop life skills and make positive choices. You’ll build strong, trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced difficulties in mainstream education and use your personality, patience and enthusiasm to encourage them to succeed.

With small class sizes and a supportive school environment, this role offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people’s lives, while gaining valuable experience working with SEMH pupils.

Why Sport?

Sport can be a powerful tool for supporting young people with SEMH needs. Whether it’s football, fitness, team games, outdoor activities or simply encouraging pupils to get active, you’ll help create opportunities for pupils to:

  • Build confidence, self-esteem and resilience
  • Develop teamwork, communication and social skills
  • Manage emotions and regulate behaviour
  • Experience success and develop a positive mindset
  • Build trusting relationships with adults and peers
  • Re-engage with learning and develop a more positive attitude towards school

Requirements (Please Apply Only If You Meet the Below)

To be considered for this School Sports Youth Worker role, you will:

  • Have experience working with children or young people, ideally in education, sports coaching, youth work, mentoring or a community setting
  • Have a genuine interest in sport, physical activity and supporting young people
  • Have an understanding of, or willingness to learn about, SEMH needs and challenging behaviour
  • Be confident building positive relationships with young people and encouraging those who may be disengaged or reluctant to participate
  • Be patient, resilient and adaptable, with the ability to remain calm and consistent when supporting pupils with emotional or behavioural difficulties
  • Be proactive and enthusiastic, with the personality to engage pupils both inside and outside the classroom
  • Hold the right to work in the UK and be able to provide two professional references
