Job Summary

Mary Elliot Academy is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Sports & PSHE Cover Supervisor to join its specialist SEND setting in Walsall.

This role would be particularly well suited to someone with a background in sports coaching, PE, youth work, mentoring or education who can engage young people and build positive relationships.

There is potential for the role to become permanent for the right candidate, making this an excellent opportunity for someone looking to establish a long-term career within a specialist school.

The School and Role

Mary Elliot Academy supports learners aged 11–18 with a range of additional needs, including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and complex needs.

As a Sports & PSHE Cover Supervisor, you will support learners across practical PE, PSHE and wider learning activities. You will work alongside teaching staff and support learners to remain engaged, develop confidence and build important life and social skills.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering pre-planned PE and PSHE lessons

  • Supporting practical sports and physical activities

  • Encouraging participation, teamwork and positive relationships

  • Supporting learners with ASC and additional needs

  • Managing behaviour calmly and consistently

  • Helping learners develop confidence, resilience and independence

  • Adapting activities to meet individual learner needs

  • Maintaining a positive and structured learning environment

  • Working alongside Teaching Assistants and specialist support staff

  • Supporting learners to engage with their wider curriculum and preparation for adulthood

You do not necessarily need to be a qualified teacher for this role. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong experience in sports, coaching, youth work, education or working with young people.

Who We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working with children or young people

  • A background in sports, PE, coaching, youth work, mentoring or education

  • Confidence leading groups and practical activities

  • Strong communication and behaviour-management skills

  • A calm, patient and resilient approach

  • The ability to build positive relationships with learners

  • An interest in supporting young people with SEND

  • A willingness to adapt activities to meet individual needs

Experience of working with ASC, SEND or challenging behaviour would be advantageous but is not essential.
