What is a Cover Supervisor?

As a Cover Supervisor, you will be expected to supervise pupils in the absence of a teacher, managing the class and ensuring that pupils remain on task with pre-set work. You will cover classes across the full range of secondary school subjects, but don’t worry, you are not expected to be a subject specialist in each area. The lesson will always be planned and provided in advance.

Key aspects of the Cover Supervisor role are:

  • Facilitate the classes’ learning
  • Manage behaviour issues
  • Record accurate registers
  • Provide handover notes to the absent teacher

This role provides a great opportunity to gain experience of working within a Secondary school prior to applying to Initial Teacher Training. Although previous experience of working in a Secondary School is desirable it is not essential.

Training

Vision for Education has created a bespoke FREE OF CHARGE Cover Supervisor training programme designed in collaboration with the North East Partnership Teacher Training provision. Our training programme consists of some online courses and a half-day, in-house training session, covering all aspects of the role including what to expect day-to-day and next steps. Following the session, our team will continue to support you once working within schools, continuing to offer a variety of CPD courses and inclusive support from our experienced and friendly team.

Training Package Includes:

  • Developing Safeguarding Knowledge
  • Introduction to Managing Behaviour
  • Lesson Structure & Classroom Routines
  • Building Effective Relationships
  • Effective Skills & Qualities
  • Understanding Additional Needs

  • A willingness to learn and develop new skills
  • Desirable to be degree educated or equivalent
  • Friendly and approachable

  • Strong communication skills
  • Flexibility to work on short notice
