This role would suit a qualified PE professional, sports coach, fitness instructor, youth worker or someone with strong experience engaging young people through sport and physical activity.

You don't necessarily need to have worked in a specialist school before. If you are confident leading activities, building positive relationships and managing behaviour, we would love to hear from you.

The School and Role

Mary Elliot Academy is a specialist setting supporting young people aged 11-18 with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD).

The school provides a supportive and structured environment where pupils are encouraged to develop their communication, independence, confidence and life skills.

As a PE Instructor, you will deliver and support engaging physical education and sporting activities, helping pupils develop their physical skills while also building confidence, resilience, teamwork and positive behaviour.

You will work closely with teachers and the wider support team to ensure activities are accessible, engaging and appropriate for the individual needs of the pupils.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adapt activities to meet a wide range of SEND needs and abilities.

  • Encourage pupils to participate and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.

  • Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.

  • Promote teamwork, communication, confidence and resilience through sport.

  • Support pupils who may display challenging behaviour or require additional emotional regulation.

  • Work alongside teachers and support staff to provide a consistent approach.

  • Encourage pupils to develop independence and life skills.

  • Maintain a safe and inclusive environment during activities.

  • Help pupils experience success and recognise their individual achievements.

  • Contribute to the wider life of the school through sport and enrichment activities.

  • Patient, energetic and enthusiastic.

  • Able to build strong relationships with young people.
