Smart Teachers are currently working with a supportive secondary school in East London who are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a pupil with severe autism. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced SEND professional, Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Support Worker, or individual with a strong background in autism support to make a meaningful impact on the educational and personal development of a young learner.

The successful candidate will work closely with the pupil, school staff, and wider SEND team to provide consistent support, helping the pupil to access learning, develop communication strategies, and feel safe and confident throughout the school day.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with autism and complex SEND needs
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach with the ability to build trusting relationships
  • Experience supporting pupils with anxiety, emotional regulation, or challenging behaviour
  • Confidence implementing strategies to support positive behaviour and engagement
  • The ability to remain composed and proactive in situations where a pupil may become distressed
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs and helping them achieve their potential

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with severe autism
  • Supporting the pupil's learning, communication, and emotional wellbeing
  • Helping to create a safe and structured learning environment
  • Working alongside teachers and SEND professionals to implement individual support strategies
  • Encouraging independence, confidence, and positive engagement in school life
