As a Learning Support Assistant in Lancaster, you will work closely with teaching staff and the school's SEND team to provide targeted support to Year 7 pupils with autism.

You will help pupils access the curriculum, develop their communication and social skills, build confidence and independence, and overcome barriers to learning.

The role will involve developing positive relationships with pupils and providing consistent, patient and compassionate support throughout the school day. You may provide one-to-one and small-group support, helping pupils with their learning, communication, emotional regulation and engagement.

Previous experience working in education is not essential. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates who have experience in support work, care, residential settings, youth work or working with young adults, as these skills can be highly transferable to supporting pupils with additional needs.

The successful candidate will be patient, resilient and confident in building trusting relationships with young people. You will have a genuine passion for helping children overcome barriers and reach their potential.

Requirements

To be considered for the Learning Support Assistant position, you will:

  • Have a genuine passion for supporting children and young people.
  • Ideally have experience working with children, young adults or individuals with additional needs.
  • Experience in support work, care, residential care, youth work or similar settings would be highly beneficial.
  • Be patient, caring, compassionate and understanding.
  • Have excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Be able to remain calm and consistent when supporting pupils who may experience challenges with communication, behaviour or emotional regulation.
  • Be confident working as part of a wider team.
  • Be committed to safeguarding and supporting the wellbeing of young people.

Previous school or Teaching Assistant experience is not essential, and candidates looking to move from a support-based role into education are encouraged to apply.
