Job Summary
Calthorpe Academy is looking for caring, patient and resilient Lunchtime Supervisors to support pupils during the lunchtime period.
This is a rewarding role within a specialist SEND school, where pupils have a wide range of needs and require different levels of support. You may be involved in assisted feeding, personal care, supervising play, supporting behaviour and ensuring pupils remain safe throughout lunchtime.
The role would suit someone who is calm under pressure, enjoys working with children and is confident adapting their approach to meet individual needs.
The School and Role
Calthorpe Academy is a specialist school supporting pupils aged 3-19 with a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including complex learning needs and profound and multiple learning difficulties.
As a Lunchtime Supervisor, you may work across different areas of the school depending on the needs of the pupils you are supporting.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Feeding or supervising the feeding of pupils aged 3-19
- Supporting pupils during lunchtime in the dining hall or within their classroom
- Helping pupils move safely from their classroom to the dining hall and then outside to play
- Supervising pupils in the playground and wider outdoor areas
- Directing play and encouraging pupils to participate and interact
- Engaging pupils in conversation and activities
- Ensuring pupils remain safe during lunchtime
- Managing behaviour where required
- Supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour
- Providing physical support where necessary to keep pupils safe, including supporting pupils who may attempt to leave the supervised area
- Supporting pupils with toileting where required
- Supporting personal care, including changing nappies or pads where necessary
- Supporting assisted feeding for pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
- Supporting pupils with mobility and physical needs
- Working with specialist equipment and hoists where required and following appropriate training and procedures
- Remaining calm during incidents or challenging situations
- Working closely with class staff and other colleagues to manage incidents safely
- Finding appropriate ways to communicate with pupils regardless of their individual needs or communication abilities
You will need to take the time to understand the specific needs of the pupils you are working with, as every child will have different communication, behavioural, physical and personal care requirements.
