Job Summary

Are you a creative, enthusiastic and proactive person who enjoys helping children and young people learn in different ways?

Calthorpe Academy is looking for Creative Learning Support Assistants to join its supply team, supporting learners with a wide range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

This role would suit Teaching Assistants, Support Workers, Sports Coaches, Youth Workers, Graduates and people from care or other support backgrounds who want to make a difference in a specialist education setting.

The School and Role

Calthorpe Academy is a specialist school in Birmingham supporting learners aged 2-19 with a broad range of additional needs.

Learners may have:

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

  • Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)

  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)

  • Complex learning needs

  • Communication difficulties

  • Sensory needs

  • Complex medical needs

As a Creative Learning Support Assistant, you will work alongside teachers and support staff to help pupils engage with their learning and develop their communication, confidence and independence.

The school uses a range of practical, sensory and creative approaches to learning, so we are particularly interested in people who can bring energy, enthusiasm and ideas into the classroom.

You may be supporting:

  • Creative and sensory learning activities

  • Art, music, drama and role-play

  • Sports and physical activities

  • Communication and interaction

  • Life skills and independence

  • Classroom-based learning

  • Community and practical activities

  • Positive behaviour and emotional regulation

  • Personal care where required

The role will vary depending on the class and pupils you support, making it a great opportunity for someone who enjoys variety and wants to gain experience across different areas of specialist SEND education.

  • Healthcare

  • Psychology or other relevant degrees

You should have:

  • A creative and proactive approach

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Patience and resilience

  • The ability to build positive relationships with learners

  • A willingness to adapt activities to meet individual needs

  • Confidence working as part of a team

  • A genuine passion for supporting children and young people with SEND

  • A willingness to support personal care where required

Previous specialist school experience is desirable but not essential. We value transferable experience, enthusias
