Graduate? Subject Specialist? Ready to Get into the Classroom?

Are you a graduate looking to gain classroom experience before pursuing a career in teaching?

Do you have a degree or specialist knowledge in a subject and enjoy helping others learn?

Vision for Education is recruiting Cover Supervisors to work across secondary schools in Birmingham and the surrounding areas.

This is an excellent opportunity for graduates, aspiring teachers and subject specialists who want to work in education without taking on the full responsibilities of a qualified teacher.

As a Cover Supervisor, you will deliver pre-planned lessons and activities, supervise pupils and help ensure learning continues when the usual teacher is absent. You will not normally be responsible for planning lessons or marking pupils' work.

Whether your background is in science, maths, English, humanities, sport, languages or another subject, this role could be an ideal first step into the classroom.

What Does a Cover Supervisor Do?

You will be responsible for supervising classes and ensuring pupils complete the work provided by their teacher.

Your duties will include:

  • Delivering pre-prepared lesson materials and explaining tasks to pupils.

  • Managing the classroom and maintaining a positive learning environment.

  • Ensuring pupils remain on task and complete the work set.

  • Following lesson instructions and school behaviour policies.

  • Answering pupils' questions where appropriate and within your subject knowledge.

  • Supporting pupils who need clarification or encouragement.

  • Taking the register and following school procedures.

  • Reporting any issues, concerns or incidents to the appropriate member of staff.

  • Leaving feedback for the class teacher about the lesson and pupil engagement.

You will not usually be expected to plan lessons, create schemes of work or undertake the full responsibilities of a qualified teacher.

Who Are We Looking For?

This role is particularly suited to:

  • Graduates considering teacher training.

  • Subject specialists with a degree or strong knowledge in their field.

  • Aspiring secondary school teachers.

  • Graduates in maths, English, science, humanities, languages or PE.

  • Sports coaches and instructors interested in moving into education.

  • Confident communicators with experience leading groups.

  • Individuals looking for flexible work that can fit around other commitments.

Previous classroom experience is beneficial but not always essential. We are looking for people who can take responsibility, communicate clearly and establish professional boundaries with pupils.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Confident leading a classroom.

  • Organised, reliable and punctual.

  • Able to follow instructions and deliver prepared material.

  • Calm and consistent when managing behaviour.

  • Professional and approachable.

  • Adaptable when working in different schools.

  • Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
