Can You Motivate, Inspire and Build Trust with Young People?
Are you a sports coach, youth worker, residential support worker or Teaching Assistant who knows how to build relationships with young people who need additional support?
Do you have the patience, resilience and confidence to help pupils overcome barriers to learning and make positive choices?
Vision for Education is working in partnership with Kitts Green Academy to recruit a Behaviour & Engagement Mentor in Birmingham.
This is an opportunity to use your people skills in a specialist school environment, supporting boys who may experience social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, alongside other additional needs.
You do not need to be a qualified teacher. We are looking for someone who can build rapport, maintain clear boundaries and encourage young people to re-engage with education.
The Role
As a Behaviour & Engagement Mentor, you will work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to help pupils manage challenges, develop positive relationships and participate in learning.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Building positive, consistent relationships with pupils who may struggle to engage in education.
- Supporting pupils to regulate their emotions and make positive choices.
- Encouraging participation in lessons and structured activities.
- Using agreed behaviour strategies and school support plans.
- Helping pupils develop resilience, confidence and social skills.
- Supporting transitions between lessons and activities.
- De-escalating challenging situations calmly and professionally.
- Encouraging teamwork, communication and mutual respect.
- Working with teaching and pastoral teams to promote pupil wellbeing.
- Maintaining a safe, structured and supportive learning environment.
- Following safeguarding procedures and reporting concerns appropriately.
Some pupils may display challenging behaviour or struggle with emotional regulation. You will need to remain calm under pressure, respond consistently and follow the school's policies and guidance.
Who Would Suit This Role?
This opportunity could suit candidates with backgrounds in:
- Youth work or youth offending support.
- Sports coaching, fitness or outdoor activities.
- Residential childcare or support work.
- Behaviour mentoring or pastoral support.
- Teaching assistance or specialist SEND education.
- Community work or family support.
- Psychology, criminology or related graduate pathways.
- Other roles involving boundaries, conflict resolution and relationship-building.
Experience in a school is beneficial, but transferable experience is welcome.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Confident, patient and emotionally resilient.
- Skilled at building rapport with young people.
- Firm but fair when setting boundaries.
- Able to remain composed in challenging situations.
- Consistent and proactive in their approach.
- A positive role mod
