The School and Role

An Alternative Provision school based in Christchurch are currently seeking a Behaviour Support Assistant to start in September 2025. The school caters for primary and secondary pupils aged 6 – 16 years with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, ASD, and various other needs including trauma, school phobia Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). All learners have an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

  • Full time (Monday to Friday), Permanent
  • Hours 8:30am – 3:30pm
  • Location – Christchurch
  • Start date – September

The School and Role

An Alternative Provision school based in Christchurch are currently seeking a Behaviour Support Assistant to start in September 2025. The school caters for primary and secondary pupils aged 6 – 16 years with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, ASD, and various other needs including trauma, school phobia Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). All learners have an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

The successful Support Assistant will be required to work 1-1 with pupils, assisting them academically as well as overcoming barriers to learning and supporting them emotionally. You will play a crucial role in supporting the educational and emotional development of a child with special needs or challenging behaviour. Working closely with the class teacher and special educational needs coordinator (SENCO), you will create a positive and inclusive learning environment tailored to the individual needs of the student.

The Behaviour Support role is an amazing opportunity for somebody who wants to make a difference to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and support young people to access education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1-1 support to a specific student, promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) and behaviour support strategies.
  • Work closely with the class teacher and SENCO to adapt teaching resources and approaches to suit the student’s individual needs.
  • Build a caring and supportive relationship with the student to help improve their social, emotional, and behavioural well-being.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Prior experience working with children with special needs or challenging behaviour.
  • Knowledge of different learning styles and the ability to modify teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, resilience, and a genuine passion for supporting each child\’s educational development.
