As a cancer and aseptic services pharmacist, you will be supporting a patient-centred service which is compliant with Good Manufacturing Practice. Our two aseptic units are staffed by enthusiastic and committed teams delivering a high number of doses daily across both sites to various specialties. A main part of your role will be to ensure the timely provision of chemotherapy doses to the chemotherapy day unit and the wards. Once accredited, you will help provide a clinical screening service for SACT and clinical trials, liaising with prescribers, nurses and clinical research teams. You will also play a core role in our ward-based service, directly supporting colleagues and patients in line with Trust procedures and national legislation. You will have the opportunity to develop your management skills through the supervision of our Band 6 rotational pharmacists.

Applicants should have excellent organisational and communication skills and be happy to work independently or in a team. Applicants need post-registration training and experience in Hospital Pharmacy including previous experience in at least one of the relevant areas.

Main duties of the job

  • Play an active role in the day to day running of our aseptic units by managing the final checking workload and releasing of chemotherapy safely to the day unit.
  • Be responsible for supervising the training and accreditation of junior pharmacists rotating into aseptics.
  • Become familiar with the Chemocare e-prescribing system; supporting prescribers, nurses and pharmacy staff with its use.
  • Once accredited - screen SACT prescriptions for oncology, haematology and clinical trials.
  • Work closely with a wide range of healthcare professionals to ensure SACT is prescribed safely and efficaciously.
  • Proactively support foundation and practice level band 6 pharmacists carrying out the PG Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice.
  • Provide cover for the Lead Pharmacist, Aseptic Services as requested.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy or Equivalent
  • Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
  • Post Graduate Certificate in General Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • GCP and GMP training
  • Post Graduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice or equivalent experience

Experience

  • Post-registration training and experience in hospital pharmacy including aseptic services. In addition this must include a solid grounding in all other aspects of hospital pharmacy practice (medicines information, ward services and dispensing)
  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately recommend, substantiate and communicate therapeutic options for patients
  • Practical clinical experience
  • Demonstrable use of audit to improve practice

Desirable

  • Post-registration experience in screening and verification of SACT prescriptions
  • Haematology or Oncology experience
  • Clinical Trials experience

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

  • Good ability to organise and prioritise work
  • Good clinical practical knowledge
  • Ability to influence senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management
  • Demonstrates awareness of and commitment to the Clinical Governance agenda
