We are seeking to appoint an experienced gynaecology nurse trained or willing to be trained in performing transvaginal and transabdominal scans on women who attend our Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology Unit at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital. The unit sees approximately 6,000 to 7,000 patients a year. The successful candidate will have a desire to further develop the unit, possess excellent communication skills, be empathetic and maintain a can-do attitude. You will work independently and as part of a specialist emergency gynaecology team, scanning and counselling women undergoing pregnancy loss and other gynaecological emergencies, assisting doctors during procedures, and supporting training of doctors in ultrasound skills. If you are not yet competent at scanning you will be supported to train and complete a university qualification. You will provide support to the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist and act as a resource to other professionals regarding early pregnancy, emergency gynaecology, treatment and issues.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide a high-quality diagnostic and treatment service for women referred to the emergency gynaecology department.
  • Deliver specialist nursing care based on assessment of physical, social, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs in liaison with the multidisciplinary team and other health and care agencies.
  • Act as a resource for women and the clinical and administrative teams by providing comprehensive advice, information, teaching and training within Imperial College Healthcare Trust.
  • Undertake nursing research with published outcomes, updating own knowledge to promote excellence in practice and to set quality standards within gynaecological emergency and early pregnancy.
  • Contribute to formulation of reports and clinical audits of own practice, service and outcomes.
  • Take an active role in developing the Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine service and improving patient pathways and experience.

Person Specification

Education

  • Essential: Registered Nurse with current NMC registration. Recognised ultrasound qualification in early pregnancy and gynaecology. Teaching or mentorship course. Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Desirable: Relevant nursing/health-related degree, masters, or willingness to undertake. Independent Prescriber status or willingness to undertake.

Experience

  • Essential: Minimum 2 years’ experience in gynaecology at band 6 level. Experience in scanning (transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound) patients presenting with early pregnancy or gynaecological emergencies. Experience in managing/co-ordinating a team and workload. Demonstrated use of audit to improve quality of service and patient care.
  • Desirable: Advanced clinical assessment skills.

Skills

  • Essential: Ultrasound scanning skills. Competent in phlebotomy. Ability to translate complex specialised medical information into patient-suitable language. Participation in research at local level / understanding of clinical trials.
  • Desirable: Counselling training.
