Job Summary
Reporting to the Data Centre Manager, the Technical Manager is the technical lead for all activities within the Data Centre.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Technical Resource
- Provide technical support to the Data Centre Manager (DCM).
- Maintain and develop engineering skills for all technical staff onsite.
- Ensure all Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Method of Operations (MOP) are in place and accurate for their site(s); provide assistance for other sites including peer review.
- Site Availability
- Focus on zero downtime and adequate risk analysis and mitigation.
- Maintain awareness of customer contractual SLAs and KPIs and work with the DCM to stay within the SLAs.
- Third Party Monitoring
- Oversee the general quality of third‑party works on site, including the technical ability and competency of the FM and third‑party vendors.
- Validate that Two‑Party Verification is being followed by the TSMs on site.
- Team Management
- Manage a team of Technical Shift Managers (TSMs) and ensure the shift pattern is covered at all times.
- Cover a TSM shift when required due to holiday, sickness or unplanned circumstances.
- Ensure the team knows the correct escalation process, especially for client‑affecting issues.
- Planned Preventative Maintenance
- Assist in the pre‑ and post‑review and sign‑off of planned works on‑site.
- Assist the DCM in updating and closing service tickets.
- Reporting
- Assist VIRTUS teams with asset management of new assets (asset tagging), asset lifecycle planning, technical feasibility and critical spares.
- Assist in validating the site capacity readings.
- Provide feedback on change control and customer power allocations.
- General Responsibilities
- Help ensure that all customers, staff and contractors adhere to site policies and operational processes for a safe working environment.
- Assist in overall site efficiencies without compromising uptime.
- Witness scenario testing and assist in tracking and following up on lessons learnt.
- Any other reasonable requests made by your line manager.
Person Specification
Experience
- Experience in a Data Centre or other similar critical management role.
- Experience in managing and developing a team of direct reports.
- Strong, demonstrable process‑management experience in a live operational environment.
- Real‑time incident/fault management experience in a business‑critical environment.
- Experience with business continuity, risk management, incident management and day‑to‑day engineering tasks.
Knowledge
- Good health and safety and environmental knowledge.
- Mechanical or electrical engineering with working knowledge of BMS, PMS and fire systems.
Skills
- Flexible, adaptable and innovative.
- Strong collaboration with multiple streams of stakeholders, ranging from colleagues, service partners, clients and third‑party support vendors.
- Strong ownership, accountability and sense of urgency to drive issues to conclusion.
- Good communication skills (verbal and electronic).
Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, with the requirement to participate in the escalation management on‑call rota and work out‑of‑hours to oversee critical work and manage the escalation of serious issues on sites.
