Viridien is seeking a Senior HPC Hardware Engineer to lead the design, deployment, support, and continuous improvement of HPC infrastructure across our UK Data Centre. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of mission-critical HPC platforms, while leading hardware lifecycle management and infrastructure projects. You will work across compute, GPU, storage, networking, and data centre infrastructure, providing technical leadership and supporting the delivery of world-class HPC solutions.

You will join a highly skilled engineering team responsible for supporting large-scale compute environments that power Viridien's scientific and high-performance computing workloads. The team works closely with HPC Operations, Platform Engineering, Facilities, and technology vendors to deliver reliable, secure, and high-performing infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • HPC Infrastructure & Hardware
    • Lead the installation, maintenance, and lifecycle management of HPC server infrastructure, including CPU and GPU platforms.
    • Install, upgrade, and replace server components including processors, GPUs, storage, networking, and system hardware.
    • Perform firmware, BIOS, and hardware compatibility updates while maintaining platform stability.
    • Support hardware deployments, decommissioning, and lifecycle planning.
  • Storage & Data Centre Operations
    • Manage enterprise storage platforms, including SAN, NAS, and Direct Attached Storage (DAS).
    • Monitor storage performance and coordinate hardware maintenance and vendor support.
    • Maintain spare parts inventory, warranty schedules, and lease management.
    • Support data centre standards, rack layouts, cabling, equipment audits, and operational procedures.
  • Operations & Service Management
    • Lead complex hardware troubleshooting and incident resolution.
    • Support change management, problem management, and continuous service improvement.
    • Develop and maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.
    • Participate in infrastructure projects, system deployments, and an on-call support rota.
  • Technical Leadership
    • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance across the team.
    • Collaborate with Operations, Platform Engineering, Facilities, and external vendors to deliver infrastructure improvements.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience supporting enterprise HPC infrastructure, including compute, storage, and data centre environments.
  • Strong Linux administration experience.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving complex hardware and infrastructure issues.
  • Knowledge of HPC system architecture and enterprise server platforms.
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring tools such as Zabbix.
  • Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and mentor other engineers.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting GPU-based HPC environments.
  • Experience with oil immersion cooling technologies.
  • Experience with scripting or automation languages.
  • Knowledge of computational thinking and infrastructure automation.
  • Experience delivering infrastructure projects within large-scale production environments.
