The Technology Specialist I is an essential, part‑time role responsible for maintaining the security and confidentiality of proprietary information, standardizing desktop environments, and ensuring optimal network performance across Tidewater Community College campuses.
Accountability for maintaining security and confidentiality of proprietary or sensitive information. Assist in ensuring desktop standardization and performance. Utilize diagnostic and data‑recovery software to install, set up, and configure common application software packages and operating systems (Microsoft Windows 10/11 and Apple). Assist in performing setup and maintenance of network interface systems (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, etc.). Test wiring, IP telephone equipment, and peripherals for switched and non‑switched services (voice, data, and video). Interpret written requests; coordinate work with customers; install or repair requested services; document and communicate with Telecom, Network, and Support Specialists; provide first‑level customer support; and complete appropriate paperwork.
Special Assignments: May be required to perform additional duties as assigned and may assist the agency or state government during emergency declarations.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of personal computers, operating systems, peripheral devices, and desktop applications including Apple OS, Windows 10/11, and Microsoft Office 2013/2016.
- Basic knowledge of local area networks, TCP/IP, and its application in a large WAN/LAN environment.
- Basic knowledge of Anti‑Virus and Network Security Scanning Software.
- Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair desktop computers, operating systems, and peripherals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with end users and technical staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, participate in cross‑departmental projects, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously under pressure.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team without direct supervision.
- Basic knowledge of Voice Over IP concepts for Ethernet networks.
