The Physical Therapist is primarily responsible for delivering physical therapy care to the assigned patient population and documenting this care in the hospital medical record. The therapist acts as a consultant to various patient clinics, provides instruction to PT support staff, students, personnel of other disciplines within VCUHS, and patient and/or family members. Therapists may rotate through various clinical service areas.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

  • Licensed (or licensure eligible) by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:

  • Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist
  • Current CPR Certification if required by clinic or practice area

Experience REQUIRED:

  • New graduate to up to 2 years of work experience as a Physical Therapist

Experience PREFERRED:

  • Previous affiliation or work experience at a similar facility

Education/training REQUIRED:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Physical Therapy

Education/training PREFERRED:

  • Masters or Doctoral Degree from an accredited School of Physical Therapy

Independent actions required:

  • Patient evaluation and implementation of plan of care, discharge planning
  • Ordering equipment
  • Representing department at rounds and discharge conferences
  • Scheduling and charging patients

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable):

  • May supervise Physical Therapist Assistants, Rehab Technicians, students, and volunteers

Participates in a self-directed team, applying knowledge to daily problem solving, escalating unresolved issues to management.

Additional position requirements:

  • Work hours will be established with your specific manager and may include weekends and holidays based on staffing needs

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical: Lifting 50-100 lbs.
  • Activities: Bending, walking, climbing, reaching, repetitive motion

  • Emotional: Ability to work in a fast-paced, noisy environment, handle multiple priorities, adapt to change, and manage customer interactions
