Role Overview
As a Messaging & Services Designer in our Core Engineering team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping how critical messaging and service platforms are designed, evolved and delivered across Virgin Media O₂. You will translate complex technical capabilities into clear, robust designs that support both live and test environments, enabling services that are relied on every day by our customers and the wider business. In this role, you will work at the heart of our messaging and services ecosystem, supporting initiatives such as satellite connectivity, emergency broadcast services and enhanced location services. You will act as a trusted technical authority and consultant, aligning supplier roadmaps with our long-term plans and budgets, while ensuring every service is designed with customer experience, resilience and performance at its core. You will collaborate closely with teams across marketing, security and procurement, helping to turn ideas into deliverable, high‑quality services that meet business and customer needs.

The must haves
- An understanding and appreciation for the cellular networks and networking principles (2 or more preferred) IMS, 5G, 4G, UMTS, GSM, IMS.
- Knowledge and practical experience of standards across network, signalling protocols.
- Proven track record in production of accurate and complete technical design requirement specifications and ensuring clarity and conformance with external suppliers and internal customers.
- Strong analytical skills and sound practical judgement required to understand complex and often conflicting requirements.
- An enthusiastic self‑motivated team player with drive to succeed.
The other stuff we are looking for
- Experience of managing the vendor relationship is required, with the ability to take ownership of issues and drive these through to resolution.
