This is a full-time, permanent role with hybrid working, based in Northamptonshire, focusing on producing detailed electrical and civil design packs, supporting utility connection works, and ensuring all designs meet industry standards and client requirements.

Working closely with engineers, project managers, construction teams, and DNO/IDNO stakeholders, you will help deliver compliant, buildable and cost-effective designs across a range of electricity distribution and connection projects.

You will play a key role in developing design solutions for substation, cable, and network infrastructure works, supporting projects from initial concept through to construction and as-built stages, while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce detailed electrical and/or civil design drawings for utility infrastructure projects.
  • Develop design packs including drawings, schematics, single line diagrams, and supporting documentation.
  • Support LV and HV network design activities, including substations, cable routes, and associated infrastructure.
  • Ensure all designs comply with G81 standards, ENA Engineering Recommendations, and DNO/IDNO requirements.
  • Liaise with engineers, site teams, and project managers to ensure design accuracy and buildability.
  • Support the preparation and submission of design approvals to DNO/IDNO stakeholders.
  • Carry out design amendments based on site feedback and client requirements.
  • Maintain accurate design records, revision control, and project documentation.
  • Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards.
About You

You are an experienced Design Engineer with a background in utilities, electricity distribution, or infrastructure projects and are confident producing detailed technical designs within a fast-paced delivery environment. You enjoy working collaboratively with engineering and operational teams, translating technical requirements into clear, accurate and buildable design outputs. You are organised, detail-focused, and comfortable managing multiple design workstreams while maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance.

Essential Experience & Qualifications
  • Proven experience as a Design Engineer within utilities, ICP, IDNO, or infrastructure environments.
  • Experience producing LV/HV electrical distribution or utility infrastructure designs.
  • Strong understanding of G81 standards and ENA Engineering Recommendations.
  • Experience producing design packs, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD (or equivalent design software).
  • Understanding of electricity distribution networks, substations, and cable systems.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
  • Experience working within an ICP or utility contractor environment.
  • Knowledge of DNO/IDNO design approval processes.
  • Exposure to HV projects (up to 11kV or 33kV).
  • Experience supporting substation, cable, or network connection projects.
  • Background within utilities, energy, or infrastructure sectors.
