Job Title: Senior Technician – Substations
Location: Glasgow (Hamilton)
Reporting to: Section Lead – Substation Civil
Business Unit: Omexom Design
Purpose of the Position
To lead the production of high-quality civil and structural design drawings and models for transmission and distribution substation projects. The Senior Technician will support engineering teams with detailed 2D/3D design outputs, contribute to digital collaboration workflows, and help ensure compliance with internal and client technical standards.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Including but not limited to:
- Drawing Production
Prepare and coordinate detailed civil and structural drawings, including general arrangements, foundations, cable trenches, access roads, transformer bunds, and fencing layouts.
- 3D Modelling
Develop and maintain 3D models using tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or Civil 3D for use in design reviews and clash detection processes.
- Design Coordination
Collaborate closely with engineers and other design disciplines (e.g. electrical, structural) to ensure integrated and accurate design outputs.
- Quality Control
Review and check drawings for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with relevant standards (e.g. ENA TS, NGET TS, BS EN, CDM 2015).
- CDE and BIM Support
Manage drawing files, model updates, and version control within the Common Data Environment (CDE) and support BIM coordination in line with ISO 19650.
- Technical Support
Support the development of design documentation including schedules, bills of quantities, and drawing registers.
- Mentoring and Guidance
Assist in the training and development of junior technicians, ensuring consistent standards and promoting digital delivery best practices.
- Site Interface
Support engineers with site-based activities such as surveys, data capture, and drawing mark-ups during construction phases.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- HNC/HND or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Construction, or Structural Design.
- Significant experience producing civil/structural drawings for substation or energy infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and at least one of: Civil 3D, Revit, or MicroStation.
- Familiarity with UK standards and design practices including Eurocodes, BS EN, and CDM 2015.
- Experience working within a Common Data Environment (CDE) and understanding of digital collaboration workflows.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience with BIM environments and understanding of ISO 19650.
- Knowledge of drainage and foundation detailing specific to substation projects.
- Experience working with client specifications from National Grid, SSEN, or SPEN.
- Ability to manage workload across multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to self-check outputs.
