The TOHL South Site Manager will lead and oversee the safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of National Grid Transmission Overhead Line (OHL) and DNO OHL construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects. This role requires strong leadership, deep technical knowledge of OHL assets, and proven experience working under National Grid's safety and other DNO's, quality, and operational frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Site Leadership & Management
    • Lead day-to-day site operations for OHL construction, refurbishment, or maintenance works.
    • Coordinate and supervise site teams, subcontractors, and specialist resources.
    • Ensure all works are delivered in accordance with National Grid policies, procedures, and technical specifications.
    • Conduct daily briefings, toolbox talks, and site coordination meetings.
  • Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ)
    • Maintain a strong safety culture aligned with National Grid's Life Saving Rules and CDM Regulations.
    • Ensure compliance with all SHEQ requirements, including RAMS, environmental controls, and incident reporting.
    • Carry out site inspections, audits, and safety observations.
    • Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Technical & Project Delivery
    • Manage OHL works including tower erection, steelwork replacement, conductor installation, insulator changes, and associated civil works.
    • Ensure all work is completed to National Grid Transmission standards (e.g., TS, NSI, and OHL-specific procedures).
    • Monitor progress against programme and escalate risks or delays.
    • Coordinate outages, access arrangements, and permits with National Grid representatives.
  • Stakeholder & Communication
    • Act as the primary site contact for National Grid, landowners, subcontractors, and internal project teams.
    • Provide regular progress updates, site reports, and documentation.
    • Support community engagement and manage site impacts such as noise, access, and environmental concerns.
  • Documentation & Compliance
    • Maintain accurate site records including permits, inspections, daily logs, and quality documentation.
    • Ensure all works are completed in line with National Grid's quality assurance processes.
    • Support handover documentation, as-built records, and project close-out requirements.

Key Interfaces

Relationships with key stakeholders: Client Representatives, Project Managers, External stakeholders e.g. client, authorities.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience managing National Grid Transmission OHL projects.
  • Strong understanding of OHL construction methods, tower types, conductor systems, and safety requirements.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of National Grid NSI procedures, including NSI 4, NSI 6, and OHL-specific NSIs.
  • SMSTS or equivalent site management qualification.
  • National Grid Person & BESC (current or recently held).
  • IOSH/NEBOSH certification.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor/Coordinator.
  • First Aid at Work.
  • Experience with National Grid's Work Management System (WMS) and Permit to Work processes.
  • Experience with major contractors delivering OHL frameworks.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong leadership and team coordination.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
  • High commitment to safety and quality.
  • Ability to manage complex site logistics and multiple work fronts.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making under pressure.
