The Quality Engineer (QE) supports the Quality Management Lead (QML) in ensuring project quality requirements are met across the full HPC project lifecycle. The role provides implementation and monitoring support and does not hold accountability for final quality decisions, which remain with the QML.

The delivery of the HPC Project is split across three Areas, supported by a number of transverse programmes of works to which the Quality Department provides quality related services. Quality Delivery Managers in each Area/Programme specify their needs and monitor service performance to the other department managers. For day‑to‑day reporting, QMLs report to the QDM. Within the Quality Delivery Team, administrative line reporting is to the Quality Delivery Manager who ensures QMLs perform and apply the appropriate processes to deliver to programme quality requirements.

To keep these duties to a manageable level, the Quality Delivery Manager will be supported by a number of Team Leaders. A competence‑based assessment will be applied to allocate QMLs to discrete contracts/work packages/equipment (whichever is relevant), which then forms their work portfolio. Depending on HPC's business needs, there may be circumstances when a QML is required to work on more than one Area or Programme. The QML will seek support from the Quality Delivery Manager to resolve tactical day to day quality issues. Escalation on key topics, such as EDF Direction Industrielle (DI) surveillance for example, will be to the Quality Delivery Manager. In practice, the Quality Delivery Manager will rely on the Team Leaders to help discharge these duties. Progress reporting on deliverables, issues and escalation points will be to the Quality Delivery Manager with the Project Manager in copy. Progress meetings will take place at the discretion of the QDM when working within their programme.
