The Carbon and Sustainability Graduate will provide support to the Environment and Sustainability Manager for our electricity substation and overhead line operational teams on all aspects of sustainability and carbon management; developing documentation, compliance with legal, regulatory, client and company standards, and helping to promote sustainability best practice and deliver a culture of continual improvement.

The individual will be required to work with clients and project teams to ensure all Carbon and Sustainability requirements are complied with, supporting on-site teams, sustainability of works, management of the client carbon reporting system, and input into the client sustainability reporting system, as required., Including but not limited to the following:

  • Management of the client carbon reporting system.
  • Whole Life Cycle Carbon assessments to identify embodied carbon and operational carbon calculations.
  • Identify areas where carbon savings can be achieved and communicate these to project teams.
  • Drive opportunities for carbon savings through design and into construction.
  • Contribute to carbon reduction opportunities in infrastructure and alignment with industry / project sustainability targets, and the production of Sustainability Action Plans and Carbon Management Plans to actively reduce embodied carbon in our projects.
  • Provide support to the Environment and Sustainability Manager and our operational teams on sustainability matters.
  • Provide support to the Environment and Sustainability Manager to obtain PAS2080 certification and maintain the ongoing requirements.
  • Assist the team in monitoring and maintaining compliance with environmental and sustainability legislation, best practice, project documentation and company procedures.
  • Assist project teams in compiling environmental and sustainability data to facilitate reporting against key metrics, objectives and targets.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of environmental training.
  • Assist with the development of Environmental Management System documentation and procedures.
  • Help to maintain relationships and liaise with regulators, stakeholders, clients, project teams and subcontractors.
  • Contribute to sustainability activities for the project and business.
  • Assist in the production of internal and external reports as required (e. g. best practice bulletins, case studies, environmental and sustainability performance reports).

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with all stakeholders (internal and external), with the enthusiasm, motivation, and initiative to succeed in this role.

The jobholder must possess

  • Knowledge and understanding of Whole Life Cycle Carbon assessments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of PAS2080 requirements.
  • Ability to collate, manage and interpret large data sets.
  • Strong IT skills to manage inputs into external reporting systems.
  • Ability to establish effective networks, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to collate and report construction data via internal systems.
  • Ability to produce project documentation to a high standard.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexibly between home, office, and site.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Desirable Criteria

  • Educated to degree level in Carbon Management, Sustainability, or related discipline.
  • Practical experience and knowledge of carbon management or sustainability in an operational environment.
  • Knowledge of applying sustainability within construction projects.
  • Relevant industry experience working in a carbon or sustainability role.
  • Previous experience conducting Whole Life Cycle Carbon assessments.
  • Understanding of the construction environment.
  • Knowledge of electricity infrastructure.
  • Membership of an environmental organisation (e. g. ISEP).
  • Experience of PAS 2080 and ISO14001.
  • Full UK driver's licence and flexibility to travel regularly within the England region.
