As a Software Controls Systems Engineer (DCS) you will design, configure and commission distributed control systems for process and manufacturing clients. Working within multi-disciplinary teams, you will deliver high-quality DCS and safety instrumented system (SIS) solutions from specification through to commissioning and handover. The role requires practical engineering experience, strong software configuration skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients and project teams.

Responsibilities

  • Design, configure and test DCS software (e.g., Siemens PCS 7 or PlantPAx) and associated controllers in line with project requirements.
  • Develop control strategies, logic diagrams, function blocks, control narratives and operator displays.
  • Implement and configure alarm management, historian interfaces and system diagnostics.
  • Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and SAT (Site Acceptance Testing) activities, including test script preparation, execution and defect resolution.
  • Commission and troubleshoot control systems on site, ensuring safe working practices and close liaison with clients and third-party contractors.
  • Prepare technical documentation including system architecture, wiring lists, I/O maps, software change records and user manuals.
  • Provide handover, training and post-commissioning support to clients and operations teams.
  • Contribute to project planning, risk assessments and continuous improvement initiatives to drive quality and efficiency.
  • Responsible for designing, configuring, and optimising automation hardware, including sensors, actuators, PLCs, and control devices, to ensure reliable and efficient operational performance when required.

This is a site-based role located in Worksop with regular travel to client sites across the UK as required. You will work closely with project managers, electrical and mechanical engineers, subcontractors and client representatives. Flexible working arrangements will be considered where project delivery allows.

Qualifications

  • Practical knowledge of one or more DCS platforms (examples: Siemens PCS 7 or PlantPAx) and common industrial protocols (Modbus, OPC, PROFIBUS, Ethernet IP).
  • Experience in PLC programming, HMI/SCADA development and integration with DCS platforms.
  • Understanding of control theory, process instrumentation and industrial communication networks.
  • Experience of FAT, SAT and site commissioning activities in industrial environments.
  • Familiarity with safety instrumented systems (SIS), SIL concepts and relevant standards (e.g., IEC 61511) is desirable.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with clients and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Relevant engineering qualification (HNC/HND/BEng or equivalent) or significant demonstrable experience in controls engineering.
  • Experience working with automation hardware, including sensors, actuators, PLCs, and related control systems would be advantageous.
