Purpose of Role

To provide high-quality industrial and commercial plumbing services across the UCL estate, ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of mechanical, water, and heating systems.

Job Description

The role includes planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, small works, and support for project activities while ensuring minimal disruption to university staff, students, researchers, and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out PPM on all plumbing and water systems, including domestic water, drainage, hot water generation, and commercial/industrial pipework.
  • Respond effectively to breakdowns, leaks, and emergency call-outs in a busy, multi-building campus environment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair faults within mechanical systems such as calorifiers, pumps, valves, pipework, boosters, and heating systems.
  • Ensure all works comply with current building regulations, water hygiene standards, and VINCI Facilities policies.
  • Support Legionella control procedures, including temperature checks, flushing regimes, and record keeping.
  • Conduct risk assessments, method statements, and permit-to-work documentation as required.
  • Assist with installation, modification, and commissioning of new plumbing systems, fixtures, and plant.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, contractors, and project managers on minor works and upgrade projects.
  • Provide technical input on materials, equipment, and design where necessary.
  • Work professionally within a live university environment, ensuring clear communication and minimal disruption.
  • Liaise with UCL facilities teams, academic departments, and end users to ensure high service standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of work completed within CAFM systems (tasks, materials, time).
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams within VINCI Facilities, including mechanical, electrical, and fabric engineers.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements, energy savings, and system optimisation.
  • Participate in on-call rota duties and occasional out-of-hours work when required.

Essential Qualifications/Skills

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in Plumbing or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proven experience in industrial or commercial plumbing within complex estates (hospitals, universities, research facilities, commercial buildings).
  • Experience working on heating systems, boilers & immersion/calorifiers.
  • Electrical safe working knowledge.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Legionella control, water regulations, and safe systems of work.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings/schematics.
  • Competent with IT-based job management systems.
