The Business Unit General Manager will have full responsibility for the operations of the Business Unit, including full strategic and business development, financial performance, health and safety, project management and people development.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Strategic and Business Development
- Establish the strategy and marketing plan of the Business Unit, in association with the Managing Director and Business Unit Project Managers to successfully achieve the goals of the business.
- Control and execute the Business Unit’s Shared Strategic Plan.
- Develop and implement new business development strategies and plans to identify new opportunities for growth.
- Organise sales and business development activity.
- Identify process improvements which improve efficiency and competitive edge.
- Assist the Project Managers in the sale, execution, and management of their contracts.
- Review tenders submitted by Project Managers and validate bids up to the level of delegation.
- Present bids over delegation of authority to the Director for approval.
- Financial Performance
- Consistently apply the principles of the Company’s business management system, Quartz.
- Define the Business Unit's annual budget in line with the strategy.
- Take full P&L responsibility and oversee financial performance ensuring targets are met.
- Oversee the monthly projects reviews and the quarterly closing of accounts (EV) and ensure they are validated and complete.
- Monthly reporting on business unit operational performance and identify improvements to operational project delivery.
- Health and Safety, Environmental and Quality
- Responsible and accountable for the effective management of health and safety, quality, and environment to ensure this is positively promoted and always at the forefront of everyone’s mind.
- Project Management
- Ensure the effective execution of contracts including risk management and commercial arrangements.
- Assist Project Directors & Managers in their execution and management of contracts to ensure that all projects are delivered following the standard methodology and in line with estimated cost and estimated profit.
- Organise commercial action plans and monthly sales meetings with Project Directors & Managers.
- Leadership and People Development
- Lead a high-value multi-discipline team including Project Managers who are responsible for the programme delivery of Substation projects.
- Maintain effective communication and relationships both internally to ensure optimum project delivery, and externally with customers to develop a relationship of trust on which future business can be secured.
- Develop and continue to build a strong management team and staffing base within the Business Unit.
- Delegate responsibilities and supervise the work of the management team providing guidance and motivation to drive optimum performance.
- Full responsibility for all aspects of human resources including the recruitment and retention of staff and performance management.
- Validate annual training plans and investment and encourage staff development.
- Support collaborative working and networking with other Business Units within the Group.

Qualifications and experience
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience within Engineering or the power generation industry.
- Relevant qualifications in Leadership and Project Management.
- Significant experience of managing Substation projects within the high voltage transmission sector.
- Previous work experience in a Project Management / Senior Management role.
- Strong communication and relationship building skills to create collaborative relationships.
- Experience of managing Project Managers and leading operational teams.
- Significant experience in dealing with DNO and TNO customers and negotiating variations.
- Experience of developing and implementing strategic plans to deliver business growth.
- Management of full P&L and financial performance measures.
- Experience of working in a project-based business.
- Familiar with implementation of Project Management methodologies from design to construction and commissioning.
