Program Overview
We have created the Nautical Education Program to enable candidates and existing employees alike to develop their careers in the nautical department. The A0 Sailor Program is the entry level for individuals new to the inland shipping industry and serves as the foundation for future Sailor duties.

Training Details
The training takes place on board a Viking Longship and is led by the Captain. A dedicated trainer team coordinates the program and verifies progress with the Captain and the trainer. The program requires 90 sailing days of practical training. After completion, a written exam is administered. Successfully passing the exam awards you the Sailor (Matrose) qualification and a Sailor contract with Viking. All training costs are covered by Viking.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma
- English language knowledge
- Dutch and/or German language knowledge is an asset
Responsibilities
- Active participation in the onboard training program led by the Captain
- Studying the assigned course material
- Attendance of an exam after 90 days of practical training
- Responsible for safety on board of the ship as assigned by the Captain
- Compliance with guidelines, instructions, and regulations
- Responsible for impeccable cleanliness, hygiene, and order onboard
- Reporting damages, issues, and concerns immediately to the Captain
- Co-responsible for the operational readiness of the rescue boat
- Responsible for the external appearance of the ship
- Exchange information with parties involved (Captain, 1st Officer, Engineer)
- Appropriate and professional securing of the ship
- Safe deployment of the gangway only under instruction and supervision by the Captain / First Officer
- Presence on deck during navigation of narrow waters and through locks
- When passing low bridges, secure passenger access to staircases
- Ensure the sundeck always meets guest expectations
- Execution of all deck and outboard work
- Luggage service according to assignment by the Captain / First Officer
- Participation in meetings and company-relevant training
