About the Position

The Dean of Learning and Teaching will ensure that the delivery and implementation of VCAD’s education strategies are aligned with VCAD policies, partners’ regulations and OfS conditions, and that VCAD’s academic staff deliver a high-quality academic experience to our students, and that VCAD’s teaching and learning meets the expectations of its Board of Governors, academic partners and external regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate, manage and provide strategic direction and implementation for all aspects of VCAD’s academic staff development.
  • Oversee the maintenance, implementation and evaluation of VCAD’s education strategies, ensuring they are consistent with best practice and drive the delivery of excellent teaching and assessment in line with the requirements of regulators, partners and other stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and delivery of a continuous professional development programme for all academic staff, with particular emphasis on CPD programmes aligned to the Advance HE Professional Standards Framework.
  • Manage and deliver a coherent pathway and support structure to ensure that all VCAD academic staff engage with, or gain, appropriate higher education teaching qualifications or recognition, such as FHEA or PGCE, within 12 months of joining VCAD.
  • Maintain an active network for the College’s teaching staff, supporting enhancements to pedagogy and the curriculum, and facilitating pedagogical innovation.
  • Lead the design, implementation and analysis of teaching observation programmes.
  • Research and develop strategies for the use of emerging teaching and learning technologies, advising the College on the adoption of new and appropriate tools, and enable their effective and efficient implementation by academic staff.
  • Ensure that the delivery of teaching and learning at VCAD is always compliant with, and aligned to, relevant VCAD policies.
  • Work collegiately with other senior academic staff to develop and enhance VCAD’s learning, teaching and assessment processes and policies in response to internal changes, such as new subject areas and external developments, including the introduction of new techniques or practices, in collaboration with external partners and all VCAD stakeholders.
  • Analyse student performance data at institutional, faculty, programme and module level to identify objective trends and developments, establish best practice, and highlight areas requiring intervention and improvement.
  • Support the development and implementation of effective processes for the recruitment and induction of new academic staff, and for the structured evaluation of VCAD’s teaching and learning.
  • Provide holistic leadership, management and direction to the VCAD Academic Success Tutor team, using quantitative and qualitative data to develop and deliver programmes that enhance student engagement, improve student retention, and achieve positive student outcomes across the B3 metrics of continuation, completion and progression.
  • Monitor, review and report on teaching and learning programmes, interventions and developments to the VCAD Academic Committee on a quarterly basis.
  • Oversee the management and development of VCAD’s library services across all VCAD campus sites.
