The Company
Our client is a large, internationally recognised manufacturing engineering business with a strong reputation for delivering heavy equipment and material handling solutions across global industrial sectors. Due to continued growth and ongoing investment across their Northern Ireland operations, they are seeking to appoint an experienced Project Design Engineer to lead engineering projects and support ongoing product development activities within their engineering division.
The Role
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will take ownership of engineering projects across a range of mobile and heavy engineering equipment. The role will involve leading projects from concept through to production release while working closely with engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, production, and operational teams to ensure successful delivery of engineering solutions. You will support product development, design improvements, engineering change activities, and technical problem-solving while providing technical guidance across project activities and mentoring junior engineering staff where required. This opportunity would suit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer or Senior Design Engineer looking to take on greater project ownership and technical responsibility within a large-scale manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering and product development projects from concept through to production
- Manage engineering activities across multiple concurrent projects
- Support product improvement and engineering enhancement initiatives
- Create and review engineering drawings and technical documentation
- Coordinate engineering changes in line with company procedures
- Provide technical support across engineering, production, and manufacturing teams
- Work closely with supply chain and operational teams to support project delivery
- Support design reviews, problem-solving activities, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Mentor and support junior engineering personnel where required
- Ensure engineering activities are delivered to quality, cost, and timeline expectations
Essential Criteria
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or related discipline
- Minimum 5 years' experience within equipment design and manufacturing environments
- Strong background in mechanical design and engineering project delivery
- Experience leading engineering projects within manufacturing, heavy engineering, machinery, or OEM environments
- Strong CAD experience with 3D design packages such as SolidWorks or similar
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical standards
- Understanding of manufacturing processes including fabrication and welding
- Strong communication, leadership, and organisational skills
- Good problem-solving and project coordination capability
- Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office packages
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working with mobile equipment or heavy machinery
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and related components
- Experience using FEA analysis tools
- Understanding of ERP or PDM/PLM systems
- Exposure to electrical or control systems within machinery environments
