Our client is a large, internationally recognised manufacturing engineering business with a strong reputation for delivering heavy equipment and material handling solutions across global industrial sectors. Due to continued growth and ongoing investment across their Northern Ireland operations, they are seeking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to support product development, engineering improvements, and ongoing equipment enhancement projects within their material handling division. Role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the successful candidate will support product development and engineering improvement activities across a range of mobile and heavy engineering equipment. The role will involve working closely with engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, service, and operational teams to support product enhancements, cost reduction initiatives, engineering change activities, and technical problem-solving. This opportunity would suit an engineer with previous design experience within manufacturing, heavy engineering, mobile equipment, machinery, or OEM environments who enjoys both product improvement and practical engineering problem‑solving activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support product improvement and engineering enhancement projects
  • Lead product improvement and cost reduction initiatives
  • Support engineering design activities from concept through to production
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Manage engineering changes in line with company procedures
  • Support technical problem-solving activities across engineering and production
  • Assist with product support and technical queries
  • Work closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams to support operational efficiency
  • Support safety improvement activities across product lines
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams across engineering and operations

Essential Criteria

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years' experience within equipment design and manufacturing environments
  • Experience with mechanical design and engineering documentation
  • Strong CAD experience with 3D design packages such as SolidWorks or similar
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical standards
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes including fabrication and welding
  • Good communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office packages

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience working with mobile equipment or heavy machinery
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and related components
  • Experience using FEA analysis tools
  • Understanding of ERP or PDM/PLM systems
  • Exposure to electrical or control systems within machinery environments
