Vickerstock are pleased to be partnering with an established engineering contractor as they continue to strengthen their in-house design and engineering capability supporting major water and wastewater infrastructure programmes across the UK. They are seeking an experienced Design Manager with a strong water industry background to lead the multidisciplinary delivery of projects across civil, mechanical, electrical and process engineering.

With an immediate workload supporting ECI projects for Severn Trent and United Utilities, this is an opportunity to become involved at the point where some of the most important project decisions are made - influencing design strategy, buildability, programme and value before leading projects through detailed design and delivery.

Your new role as Design Manager

As Design Manager, you will take responsibility for coordinating multidisciplinary engineering design across water and wastewater projects, ensuring solutions are technically robust, commercially considered and capable of being successfully constructed. You will be responsible for:

  • Leading multidisciplinary design delivery across water and wastewater infrastructure projects
  • Coordinating Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Process Engineering teams
  • Managing design programmes, deliverables and technical interfaces
  • Leading design input during ECI, tender and optioneering stages
  • Working closely with project, commercial and construction teams to develop practical and buildable engineering solutions
  • Managing design development through to detailed design and construction
  • Chairing design reviews and multidisciplinary coordination meetings
  • Managing technical risks, design changes and project interfaces
  • Ensuring design outputs meet client requirements, relevant standards and project programmes
  • Liaising with clients, consultants, suppliers and other key project stakeholders
  • Supporting value engineering and identifying opportunities to improve project outcomes
  • Providing technical leadership and guidance to engineers throughout project delivery

What you will need to succeed as Design Manager

Significant engineering or design management experience within the water or wastewater sector. Strong understanding of multidisciplinary water infrastructure design and delivery. Experience coordinating Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and/or Process Engineering disciplines. Experience managing design from tender or ECI through detailed design and construction. Strong project coordination, programme and stakeholder management skills. Previous experience within a contractor, consultancy or design & build environment. Ability to balance technical requirements with buildability, programme and commercial considerations. Chartered Engineer status would be advantageous but is not essential.
