Overview
As Assistant Hatchery Manager, you will support the Hatchery Manager to run the hatchery efficiently, focusing on people management, egg handling, incubation, and despatch of day-old chicks. You will collaborate across teams, maintain standards, and ensure compliance with safety and welfare practices. The role offers hands-on leadership in a busy hatchery, with scope to influence processes and customer relations. Responsibilities
- Support the Hatchery Manager in the day-to-day hatchery operations
- Manage and develop hatchery operatives, including training
- Plan duty rotas, holidays and overtime; provide management cover
- Coordinate movement of eggs between farms and the hatchery
- Oversee production, processing and despatch of day-old chicks
- Coordinate egg packing, transfer and vaccination requirements
- Ensure hatchers, setters and equipment are maintained
- Oversee waste disposal, hygiene monitoring and hatchery standards
- Maintain accurate records and input data into agricultural systems
- Support purchasing of equipment, packaging, cleaning materials, PPE and supplies
- Maintain relationships with customers and suppliers
- Ensure compliance with legislation, health & safety and company procedures
- Provide night and weekend on-call cover on a rota
- Promote housekeeping, hygiene, animal welfare and environmental practices
Key requirements
- Previous people management experience
- A keen interest in agriculture
- Valid driving licence
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work on your own initiative
