An exciting opportunity has arisen at The Christie Pathology Partnership (CPP) for a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Blood Sciences department.

The Christie is a world-leading cancer treatment centre and a specialist site with no Accident & Emergency or Maternity services.

Main duties of the job

• To perform all designated duties within Pathology specimen reception in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high personal standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations.
• To prepare and process clinical specimens for biomedical testing, within operating procedures and protocols.
• To continue with personal development through academic or practical experience.

We operate from within on-site pathology laboratories and serve a population of more than 3.2 million.

The Christie Pathology Partnership delivers a high quality, responsive pathology diagnostic service to The Christie and other healthcare providers regionally and nationally.

An international leader in research, The Christie is the largest single site specialist cancer centre in Europe.

Our laboratories also provide testing, screening and assay development to support The Christie’s early phase clinical trials, with around 200 trials underway at any one time.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

• Performing all designated duties within Pathology reception in accordance with local working practices, to maintain high personal standards and conform to Health and Safety regulations.
• Preparing and processing clinical specimens for biomedical testing, within operating procedures and protocols.
• To work within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of the Pathology Reception Team Leader.
• To continue with personal development through academic or practical experience.
• Be able to rotate through all areas as required (dependent on experience and training), performing all designated duties in accordance with local working practices whilst maintaining high personal standards and conforming to Health and Safety regulations.
• Provide general advice to users of the pathology service, for example, sample type, test availability.
• Prepare samples for routine and specialist biomedical investigations, working on own initiative to agreed protocols.
• Participate in and assist with clinical trials, particularly in sample receipt and preparation.
• Propose changes to standard operating procedures as required in order to develop and streamline the service or to reflect other changes.
• Utilise the laboratory LIMS, Q-Pulse quality monitoring system and other application software according to authorised protocols including assisting in computer data entry in all areas of the laboratory.
• Communicate efficiently, courteously and with clarity at all times, whether face to face, telephone or electronic methods referring enquiries to senior staff where appropriate.
• Attend and participate positively in laboratory and other meetings as directed by Laboratory managers.
• Encourage active participation in personal development, and support the introduction of new technologies and / or systems by being a change advocate.
• Use consumables and equipment within your allocated section responsibility and be responsible for stock control audits and recording through approved channels as required.
• Report all incidents and adverse events to senior staff and enter the information in the CAPA module of Q-pulse in a timely manner as directed by senior staff.
• Demonstrate ongoing competency against training plans.

Person specification

Qualifications

• 4 GCSE at Grade C or equivalent, including Maths and English.
• A high degree of accuracy & numeracy.
• Ability to communicate with a wide range of levels of staff within the laboratory and user organisations.
• Good developed interpersonal and team working abilities.

Experience

• Previous laboratory specimen reception experience.

Skills & Knowledge

• Able to prioritise own workload and of others in team.
• Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice.
