Synnovis is a scientific organisation with a clinical purpose. Working in partnership with Guy’s and St. Thomas’s Hospitals and King’s College Hospital, we aim to set the standard for the future of pathology. This role is based in Synnovis Services which provides and manages Synnovis laboratory facilities, including all equipment, consumables, maintenance services and LIMS.
The Network Engineer is a frontline business operations role which is essential to the support and development of Synnovis IT Infrastructure, which has approximately 2400 users. This is a hands-on role and will require daily management and support of all live IT services. To support all Synnovis IT Infrastructure including network equipment, servers, desktops, laptops, and phones. Also supporting the 1st and 2nd Line Service Desk staff in supporting the wider business with day-to-day IT issues. This role does include the option of being part of a 24-7-365 1 week in 4 on-call rota for key clinical applications for which additional payment will be made.
Main duties of the job:
- Design and implement network architecture improvements across Synnovis sites
- Lead troubleshooting for critical incidents and drive root-cause analysis (RCA)
- Manage firewall policies, advanced security configurations, and change control
- Maintain and optimise MPLS/SD-WAN links and routing policies
- Ensure compliance with cybersecurity standards and internal policies
- Support and maintain server and network hardware within Synnovis
- Maintain VMware hypervisor and virtualisation platforms
- Undertake support and project work at remote sites within the Synnovis group
- Monitor and update allocated jobs within the Service Desk Tool (ServiceNow) – ensure users are kept informed on long-running calls
- Perform daily operational checks and tasks, escalating to other IT teams where necessary
- Liaise with third-party suppliers to resolve complex issues
- Alert IT Management to significant issues and risks
- Follow Incident Management and Request Fulfilment processes
- Create and maintain technical documentation and contribute to knowledge base entries

Qualifications:
- Essential criteria: Degree level or equivalent professional experience, CISCO CCNA, ITIL v4
- Desirable criteria: Professional qualifications like CISCO CCNP
Experience:
- Essential criteria: Significant experience in network administration and enterprise-level troubleshooting, experience with cloud networking (Azure/AWS), proven ability to design and implement complex network solutions, strong understanding of cybersecurity principles and compliance standards
- Desirable criteria: Knowledge of scripting for automation (PowerShell, Python), exposure to SD-WAN technologies and advanced firewall configurations, experience in managing large-scale infrastructure upgrade projects, VMWare
