We are seeking a detail-oriented and organised Customs Operator to join our customs operations team. This role is critical in ensuring smooth and compliant customs clearance processes for shipments moving worldwide, with a focus on movements to and from Europe. You will be responsible for coordinating with clients, carriers, and customs authorities, ensuring adherence to UK and EU customs regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Customs Documentation Management: Prepare and process import/export customs declarations using relevant systems (e.g., CDS, NCTS). Ensure accurate documentation checks, including invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin. Manage the creation of T1 transit documents for shipments under customs control.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay updated on UK and EU customs regulations, including post-Brexit changes. Monitor compliance with border requirements, ensuring all shipments meet HMRC and EU customs standards.
  • Customer Coordination: Liaise with clients and overseas agents to collect necessary documentation and provide updates on shipment statuses. Address client queries regarding customs duties, VAT, and clearance processes. Work closely with freight forwarding teams to ensure timely and cost-effective movement of goods. Communicate with carriers and hauliers to track shipments and resolve any clearance delays.
  • Problem Solving: Manage customs-related issues, such as shipment holds or non-compliance notices. Liaise with customs brokers, authorities, and other stakeholders to resolve disputes efficiently.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of UK and EU customs regulations and processes (e.g., export/import declarations, incoterms).
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Previous experience in customs clearance or freight forwarding.
  • Proficiency in using customs declaration software (e.g., Descartes, Destin8, or similar).
  • Knowledge of specific road freight operations and regulations.
  • Experience working with TSS (Trader Support Service) for Northern Ireland-related shipments.
  • Additional language skills, particularly in European languages, are an advantage.
