We are partnering with a highly respected, UK-based organisation with a large and diverse commercial property portfolio to appoint a Head of Health and Safety. This is a senior, influential role with real visibility. You will act as the organisation’s lead authority on Health and Safety, advising the Board and Executive Committee, shaping strategy, and embedding a strong, progressive safety culture across a complex, multi-site estate.
The role
Reporting into a senior governance function, you will take full ownership of Health and Safety across the business, ensuring compliance, managing risk, and providing clear, pragmatic advice at the most senior level. Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as the principal Health and Safety adviser to the Board, CEO and Executive Committee
- Leading the organisation’s Health and Safety management system and policies
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, ACOPs and best practice
- Overseeing fire safety, asbestos management, lone working and other critical risk areas
- Managing enterprise-level risk registers and working closely with insurers on risk improvement
- Providing Health and Safety input into capital projects, redevelopment and maintenance activity
- Supporting and developing duty holders, challenging unsafe practices, and promoting continuous improvement
- Leading audits, investigations and site inspections across a large portfolio
- Playing a key role in contractor management, CDM compliance and supplier assurance
This role blends strategic leadership with hands-on influence, and will suit someone confident operating at board level while remaining close to operational realities.
About you
You are likely to be a highly experienced Health and Safety professional with:
- Significant experience in a senior or head-of Health and Safety role
- A background in property, construction, estates, infrastructure or a similarly complex environment
- Strong board-level communication skills and the confidence to challenge senior stakeholders
- Deep knowledge of UK Health and Safety legislation and regulatory frameworks
- Experience managing risk at an organisational and portfolio level
- Chartered status (or working towards it) through IOSH or equivalent
