Via East Midlands are currently seeking a Principal Highways Engineer to join our Strategic Project Delivery team based out of our Head Office in Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the technical assurance, development and delivery of highway and civil engineering designs from handover through to construction, ensuring compliance with DMRB, MCHW and relevant British Standards, and that solutions are efficient, buildable, safe and aligned to network and client requirements.
  • Provide senior technical, contractual and cost advice throughout delivery, supporting NEC processes, RFIs and construction programming.
  • Review, approve and manage externally produced designs and technical submissions, ensuring compliance with safety, quality and performance standards.
  • Work collaboratively with Construction and Commercial teams to align design and build activities, optimising programme, cost and commercial outcomes.
  • Ensure full compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation, acting as Principal Designer on complex schemes under CDM Regulations.
  • Provide on-site technical support during construction, managing minor design changes to maintain programme, safety and quality.
  • Lead effective engagement with clients, stakeholders, Members and the public, representing Via professionally at all times.

What we’re seeking:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience in highways or civil engineering design.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (or equivalent), or working towards professional registration with active CPD.
  • Strong IT skills, including industry-standard design software and Microsoft Office.
  • Sound knowledge of highway standards (DMRB, SHW, MCHW) and CDM designer/Principal Designer duties.
  • Strong understanding of health, safety, traffic management and environmental legislation.
  • Proven experience delivering highway and civil engineering projects from design through to construction.
  • Experience managing budgets, cost control and financial reporting.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Professional, motivated and customer-focused, acting as a positive technical role model.
