Perform maintenance and repair on upholstery, carpets, wallpapers, window treatments, and related components; install new materials as requested. Inspect, measure, cut, sew, reupholster, and replace fabric, foam, padding, and hardware; restore or upgrade finishes to meet quality standards. Maintain and operate sewing equipment, fastening tools, and other upholstery-related tools; manage materials and supplies efficiently. Ensure work is completed in compliance with ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and environmental and safety policies. Address guest or crew complaints promptly and professionally; coordinate with supervisors to resolve issues. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment; report safety or maintenance concerns to supervision. Collaborate with Housekeeping, Engineering, and Purchasing as needed; assist with inventory and procurement of upholstery materials. Support on-call and alternate shift schedules; participate in ship wide drills and safety trainings as required. Document work performed, update maintenance logs, and communicate progress to supervisors.
Reporting Structure
Reporting to Hotel Service Engineer. Functional reporting to Accommodation Maintenance Manager for maintenance and repair work on all upholstery.
Safety Duties
Participates in crew safety drills according to instructions. Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures. Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others. Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of previous experience onboard vessels as an upholsterer or in an apprenticeship/entry-level upholstery role.
- Valid STCW 95 certifications.
- Upholstery-related training or certifications (sewing, fabric selection, patterning) desirable.
- Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Physically and medically fit.
- Moral integrity is required.
- Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses are appreciated.
- Proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and manuals.
Language Requirements
Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Required to stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in all areas of the vessel with noise, light traffic and distracting environments.
