Responsibilities include the safe and efficient functioning of all aspects of the engineering department during the watch, ensuring that all machinery is in safe condition and operated in a safe manner. Operations must be carried out according to correct and safe procedures.
Key tasks involve:
- Monitoring machinery to ensure efficient operation, minimising fuel and oil consumption, and ensuring maximum availability of machinery at all times.
- Making regular tours of inspection of machinery spaces during the watch.
- Keeping the Bridge or DP room and OCC informed of all relevant engine room activities and developments which may affect them.
- Ensuring that all emergency plant and equipment is in good working order, tested at set intervals, and available at all times.
- Monitoring all machinery maintenance and repairs to ensure they are carried out safely and efficiently to an acceptable standard of workmanship.
- Ensuring efficient and economic usage of spare gear.
- Keeping planned maintenance records up to date.
HSE Responsibilities include ensuring that daily activities within the engineering department are carried out in a safe and healthy manner, and that the impact of the engineering department operations on the environment is within acceptable limits. Compliance with the Company Environmental Policies regarding the discharge of bilges, sewage, etc., is mandatory.
