We are seeking an experienced HV/EHV Substation Design Engineer to deliver high-quality engineering solutions for grid and primary substations. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and specification of electrical plant for new build, upgrade, and reinforcement projects from (66kV). This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to ensure compliance with current legislation, standards, and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce a comprehensive suite of design drawings for Grid and Primary substations.
  • Prepare technical specifications for electrical plant and associated designs for substation upgrades and new substation projects (66kV).
  • Develop substation feasibility reports, cost estimates, general arrangements (GAs), and layout drawings.
  • Prepare plant specifications including transformers, switchgear, battery systems, CTs, terminations, and associated equipment.
  • Review supplier and client designs to ensure technical compliance with applicable standards, legislation, and project requirements.
  • Ensure all designs are delivered in accordance with contract requirements, client specifications, and programme constraints.
  • Undertake the role of CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer on HV and EHV projects where required.
  • Identify, communicate, and manage relevant Health & Safety risks throughout the design process.
  • Attend site meetings and provide technical support during project delivery, including managing design or requirement changes.
  • Ensure design activities are aligned with project programme, quality objectives, and commercial targets.
  • Build and maintain strong internal and external client relationships.

Requirements

  • Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent), with at least five years of relevant industry experience.
  • Proven experience in HV and EHV substation design (AIS and GIS) 66kV.
  • Strong knowledge of HV/EHV plant specification, load calculations, and rating studies.
  • Experience preparing specifications for HV/EHV substation equipment and associated accessories (CTs, battery systems, terminations, etc.).
  • Exposure to substation cable design, protection, and control systems.
  • Experience delivering small, medium, and technically complex substation projects, including new builds, retrofits, and network reinforcement schemes.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering standards and technical policies relating to HV/EHV plant, substations, earthing systems, and electrical clearances.
  • Ability to interpret and apply technical documentation related to electrical substation design.
  • Experience in design cost estimation.
  • Excellent understanding of Health & Safety and CDM Regulations, with the capability to act as Designer and/or Principal Designer.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required by project needs.
