The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for managing and delivering mechanical engineering and technical activities through the application of specialist mechanical knowledge, established engineering processes, and professional experience. Operating with a high level of autonomy, the Senior Mechanical Engineer provides technical leadership, ensures design integrity, supports project delivery, and mentors less experienced engineers. The role contributes to the successful execution of complex projects in accordance with the Client’s quality, safety, and performance standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of mechanical design and engineering solutions, ensuring compliance with project requirements, technical specifications, and relevant standards.
- Produce, review, and approve engineering documentation, including design calculations, analyses, drawings, models, specifications, and technical reports.
- Apply sound engineering judgment to resolve complex technical issues and propose innovative solutions.
- Ensure that procedures, codes, and industry standards (BS, ISO, ASME, etc.) are correctly identified, applied, and adhered to across all engineering activities.
- Contribute to the Project Safety Assessment process and ensure that risks are identified, communicated, and effectively managed.
- Ensure designs meet all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) requirements and support safe construction, commissioning, and operation.
- Promote effective cooperation across mechanical, electrical, civil, and systems engineering teams, and with other functional disciplines.
- Engage with customers and stakeholders to develop relationships, resolve technical issues, and ensure alignment of design intent and delivery.
- Support project managers and technical leads by providing accurate progress updates, technical insights, and professional recommendations.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to less experienced mechanical engineers and graduates.
- Encourage knowledge sharing, technical development, and adoption of best practices within the mechanical engineering community.
- Lead small technical teams or work independently with limited supervision, delivering work packages on time and to high quality.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively working towards Chartership.
- Significant demonstrable experience in mechanical design, analysis, and engineering within the nuclear, defence, energy, or complex infrastructure sectors.
- Proven experience working collaboratively in multi-discipline engineering teams across all phases of the project lifecycle.
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, pressure systems, rotating equipment, materials selection, fabrication, and installation methods.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface confidently with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Desirable
- Member of a recognised professional institute (e.g., IMechE) or eligible for registration with the Engineering Council.
- Experience managing mechanical engineering scope from concept design through detailed design and into Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC).
- Demonstrated experience in both commercial and defence-related engineering projects.

- May be required to travel internationally or to UK sites in support of project and customer needs.
