Senior Quantity Surveyor/Commercial Manager

A bit about the role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to become a part of our team, based in our London office; working on and supporting project delivery across a variety of infrastructure sectors.
The successful candidate will be interested in working in the Rail sector within a Design & Build environment.
In the role you will provide high-quality pre-contract and post-contract commercial management, helping clients and project teams achieve strong financial control, effective contract administration and value for money.
This is a senior, client facing role which requires hands on experience of infrastructure or rail projects, with and a strong working knowledge of NEC contracts to support the NEC Project Management Team by undertaking Contract Administration and Quantity Surveying duties.
You will be supporting the delivery of a major project and will be supported where required by the Project Director and other team members.
- We’re looking for someone with the following skills and experience to join our team:
- Quantity Surveying and Cost Management experience on major projects in the infrastructure sector, ideally Rail or relevant Highways or Major Civils experience
- A solid understanding and able to manage estimates, budgets, and feasibility studies throughout the project
- Strong working knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts, including compensation events, early warnings and change management
- An understanding of procurement, tender analysis, and contract award processes
- Experience in managing post-tender activities including variations, Compensation Events (NEC), and final accounts
- Experience in producing Cost Variance Reports, forecasts, and managing the Contractor invoicing processes
- Experience in managing Contractor/Sub-Contractor accounts and supplier procurement
- Experience of site working including leading contractor meetings and supporting project management teams commercially
- An understanding of compliance processes for Health & Safety, company policies, and contractual obligations
- Monitor committed, forecast and actual expenditure against approved budgets, identifying potential variances and recommending timely corrective action
- Prepare clear and accurate monthly commercial reports covering project costs, cash flow, change, risk, contingency, liabilities and forecast outturn cost
- Lead the preparation, assessment and agreement of valuations, payment applications, payment certificates and final accounts
- Undertake commercial assurance reviews and provide evidence-based advice to clients and project leadership teams
- Excellent commercial awareness, negotiation, analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and make informed commercial decisions
- Experience of supporting senior colleagues in maintaining strong stakeholder relationships and supporting business development through exhibiting client focused positive behaviours
- Experience mentoring and developing junior Quantity Surveyors, providing technical guidance and supporting their professional development
- Apply commercial management practices within live rail, station, depot, highways, utilities or other safety-critical infrastructure environments
- Recognise the commercial and programme implications of possessions, isolations, access constraints, operational interfaces, permits, railway standards and stakeholder approvals
- Your skills and experience
- Previous experience working as a Senior Quantity Surveyor or Quantity Surveyor within the civils sector
- Client-side experience would be advantageous however experience of Rail or relevant Highways or Major Civils, as Contractor or Consultant, is essential
- Contract knowledge; knowledge of NEC contracts is essential
- Experience of managing, or supporting the management of, contracts in an onsite Main Works Contractor environment
- Commercially aware with excellent reporting and communication skills
- Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying (or equivalent)
- A professional accreditation with a relevant body such as the RICS is desired
- Strong commercial judgement and attention to detail
- A proactive and organised approach to contract administration
- The confidence to challenge constructively and provide independent professional advice
- An ability to identify the key issue within complex commercial and contractual information
- A collaborative approach to working with all stakeholders
- A strong commitment to quality, integrity and professional standards
- The ability to manage competing priorities across several projects or commissions
- A focus on achieving timely decisions, maintaining accurate records and closing out commercial matters
- An understanding of the importance of safety, sustainability, social value and whole-life value in infrastructure investment
The successful candidate will be expected to work on site c50% of the time in the St Albans area for first 2 years of their employment, with opportunities for growth to support other projects regionally and nationally.
