Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday β Friday
Location: Hatfield, Hertfordshire
Salary: Β£29-33k Dependant on Experience

Finance Assistant
Reports to: Finance Manager
Job Description
We are looking for an experienced and detail-focused Finance Assistant to join our Finance team. The role will have responsibility for a range of day-to-day financial activities across the business, supporting the financial administration of our Pet Insurance, Pet Health Plan (PHP) and Buying Group services.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for regular reconciliations, financial reporting, invoicing and payments, while working closely with internal teams, veterinary practices, suppliers and external partners. The role will also provide opportunities to contribute to financial analysis and process improvements.
Main Duties
- Take responsibility for regular financial reconciliations, ensuring transactions are accurate, complete and discrepancies are investigated promptly.
- Manage and reconcile financial transactions including direct debit, credit card and other payments.
- Support the financial administration of Pet Insurance and Pet Health Plan activities, including income, claims, commissions and payments.
- Prepare accurate monthly and periodic financial reports, including relevant VAT information.
- Support month-end processes and provide financial information and analysis as required.
- Prepare and process invoices, payments and other financial transactions within agreed deadlines.
- Manage the preparation of Buying Group reports, including supplier purchases, rebates, charges and payments.
- Maintain accurate supplier, customer, pricing and rebate information and ensure records are kept up to date.
- Monitor outstanding balances and support effective debtor management.
- Liaise confidently with suppliers, veterinary practices, insurance partners and other external stakeholders to resolve financial queries.
- Act as a point of contact for routine banking and BACS queries.
- Identify discrepancies, trends and potential financial risks and escalation where appropriate.
- Assist with improving financial processes, systems and reporting.
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis and support on projects as required.
- Provide financial support to the Finance Manager, Financial Controller and wider business.
Person Specification
- Previous experience in a finance or accounts role, with the ability to work with a degree of independence.
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet regular reporting deadlines.
- Confident communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, proactive and able to use initiative.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills and good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Flexible approach and willingness to contribute to the development of the role and wider business.
Qualifications & Experience
- Previous experience in a finance, accounts or financial administration role is essential.
- Good understanding of accounting and financial processes.
- Experience of reconciliations, financial reporting, invoicing and payments.
- Experience with VAT reporting would be advantageous.
- AAT study or a relevant finance/accounting qualification would be desirable but is not essential.
- Strong Excel skills are essential.
- Experience within insurance, veterinary services or a Buying Group environment would be beneficial but is not essential.
This is a broad finance role suited to someone looking to take greater responsibility for their work and develop their experience across multiple areas of finance.
