The Cutting Edge programme has been designed to help veterinary surgeons build a rewarding career in Emergency and Critical Care. Through world-class CPD, interactive seminars, practical sessions, and personalised clinical mentorship, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to excel in ECC making a real difference to pets and their families.

  • 250 hours of CPD delivered by recognised ECC specialists

  • Hands on experience in your chosen clinic, guided by an experienced senior clinician
  • Training at our Central Support hub in Scotland (accommodation provided)

Core learning areas include

  • Recognition and management of shock
  • Fluid therapy and transfusion medicine
  • Respiratory and cardiac emergencies
  • Neurological emergencies and trauma
  • Surgical emergency wet labs
  • Blood gas analysis and point of care ultrasound (POCUS)
  • Clinical reasoning and decision making in ECC
  • Teamworking and client communication
  • Adjusting to night work

Work pattern and salary

After completing Cutting Edge, you will join an ECC clinic of your choice on a full time basis. You can choose a rota that suits your lifestyle, working between 30–40 hours per week. Our rotas are carefully designed to support both professional development and personal wellbeing, with no more than three nights in a row and an average of three shifts per week.

You will receive a training salary of £42,250 for the first 8 weeks, rising to up to £60,000 from week 9.

Who we’re looking for

You should have at least six months’ small animal experience and be confident consulting and performing routine surgical procedures sole charge.
