The Head of Payroll is responsible for overseeing and managing the payroll function in the UK, Ireland and Channel Islands. This role ensures accurate and timely payment of wages, compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and the efficient operation of payroll systems. We're looking for someone to work closely with the People team, Finance, and IT departments to maintain seamless payroll operations and support strategic decision-making.

Main duties:

  • Lead and manage the end-to-end payroll process for all employees - monthly, fortnightly and weekly via the Payroll Manager
  • Liaise with third party agencies in Ireland and the Channel Islands to ensure compliance and delivery of same
  • Ensure compliance with all payroll and tax legislation
  • Oversee payroll audits, reconciliations and reporting requirements including liaison with external auditors
  • Develop and implement payroll policies, procedures and internal controls to improve accuracy and efficiency
  • Work closely with the People team to ensure alignment of People and payroll policies within Dayforce and compliance with agreed processes
  • Monitor legislative changes affecting payroll to ensure business remains compliant
  • Drive payroll process improvement and digital transformation via the Dayforce project team
  • Represent the payroll function on working parties - BIK, legislative changes etc
  • Lead and mentor the payroll team via the Payroll Manager providing guidance, support and development opportunities
  • To support the business towards the achievement of the Group's strategy, goals and objectives.
  • To undertake continual professional development (CPD) as necessary.
  • Under Health & Safety at Work Act, whilst at work, you must take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of any other who may be affected by your acts or omissions.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities appropriate to your role.

About you:

We're looking for someone with previous experience in a similar role or multi-SME hands-on experience. You'll be supportive and confident in managing and developing the wider Payroll team. This role requires excellent communication, interpersonal and organisation skills, along with the ability to multi-task. Ideally you will have experience of using Dayforce.

What we're looking for:

  • Educated to A level / Degree level
  • Experience using Dayforce
  • High level skills of using Microsoft Office packages and accounting packages
  • CIPP accreditation is desirable but not essential
  • Dayforce experience is preferred

The finer details (pro rata):

  • Salary dependent on experience
  • Based out of our York central office with hybrid working available - minimum of 3 days in the office and 2 days working from home
  • Mon - Fri, 37.5 hours per week
  • 25 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays
