Salary: £40,000- £45,000 (depending on experience)

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly skilled engineering team and take the lead in managing mobile plant maintenance operations across a busy and complex industrial site.

About the Role

Reporting into the senior engineering management team, you will lead the delivery of mobile plant engineering services, ensuring safe and effective maintenance of HGVs, locomotives, material handling equipment, and other specialist vehicles. You will combine hands-on technical problem-solving with strong leadership and strategic planning to improve availability, compliance, and performance across mobile plant operations. This role offers a rewarding mix of team leadership, continuous improvement, contractor management, and technical development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a multi-skilled team responsible for mechanical and auto-electrical services across all mobile plant assets
  • Develop and implement planned maintenance and statutory inspection schedules
  • Ensure mobile plant operations meet road and rail safety, legal compliance, and performance targets
  • Provide technical solutions to resolve engineering issues across HGVs, locomotives, and specialist plant
  • Manage contractors and external service providers, ensuring safety, quality, and delivery standards are met
  • Support long-term plant improvement and replacement strategies as part of the Workshop Management Team
  • Oversee MOT preparation, locomotive inspections, and garage-based engineering activity
  • Drive team development through ongoing training and mentoring to ensure a technically competent and safety-conscious workforce
  • Monitor and manage engineering costs, risks, and resource planning effectively
  • Maintain high standards of compliance with HSE regulations, including HSG261 for motor vehicle safety

About You

We are looking for a confident and forward-thinking engineering leader with experience in mobile plant operations and workshop management. You will be hands-on, solutions-focused, and passionate about leading high-performing technical teams.

Essential Criteria

  • HNC or NVQ Level 3 (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Previous experience managing garage operations, HGV inspections, or mobile plant maintenance
  • Strong technical expertise across mechanical systems, plant availability, and engineering performance
  • Proven leadership and man-management skills with a collaborative and safety-first approach
  • Knowledge of relevant Health & Safety and environmental regulations
