Student Success Advisors (SSA) work to create an inclusive environment that champions academic success and promotes Verto's core values of compassion, transformation, vulnerability, and responsibility. SSAs are responsible for providing comprehensive support to Vertoans, cultivating mentor relationships for approximately 30-35 students within their assigned Care Teams at Verto Education. An SSA serves as a resource both academically and personally for students in their community. The SSA is critical to the student experience at Verto Education and plays a major role in advancing a culture of continuous improvement.
A successful SSA has a passion for advising and supporting students, a commitment to student learning and development in and outside the classroom, and strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. A successful SSA demonstrates initiative, possesses the ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team, communicates effectively, and maintains a positive attitude. This position regularly collaborates with the Academic Coordinator and other academic staff in support of academic success, student advising, and transfer services.
Essential Functions:
- Student Success - 40%
- Actively monitor students' academic engagement and support development of academic success habits and skills.
- Provide general, first-response academic support to students, and support resolution or escalation of student academic concerns, implementing interventions as appropriate.
- Monitor student academic accommodations and help students communicate with faculty for resources.
- Monitor the academic achievement and class attendance of assigned students.
- Make care-and-concern interventions when appropriate.
- Escalate students who are in danger of losing channel eligibility or are in need of additional support services.
- Engage in the process of Add/Drop and Course Withdrawals and provide guidance to students, including navigation within MyVerto, Canvas, and Cengage.
- Be familiar with and help to uphold the main Verto Academic Success Policies and advise students accordingly.
- Guide students in their academic pursuits and future post-Verto planning.
- Review and understand course transfer requirements for any assigned channel students.
- Plan and implement active and passive programs that align with the Verto Discovery programming model.
- Assess students' programmatic needs and address them accordingly.
- Collaborate with Verto Headquarters during Winter and Summer breaks to support global initiatives and business needs.
- Community Building and Communication - 25%
- Create and maintain a student-centered environment by interacting regularly with students and guests.
- Collaborate with the onsite team to implement the Verto Discovery Programming Model.
- Lead a monthly Care Team dinner/meal for your assigned group.
- Implement the Verto Discovery programming model and all applicable requirements.
- Promote student leaders to increase engagement on site.
- Support Student Club programs and initiatives.
- Educate students on Verto policies and procedures, including safety, security, and academic policies.
- Be visible, available, and approachable through regular office hours, events, and meetings.
- Foster an inclusive community environment.
- Create and maintain positive relationships across the organization through regular attendance and communication at global meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality of personal information about students and staff.
- Administration - 20%
- Prepare, attend, and participate in all meetings.
- Manage time effectively.
- Complete all front desk duties if applicable.
- Proficiently use Verto Education systems.
- Submit reports and paperwork on time and thoroughly.
- Monitor student academic progress and update records accordingly.
- Conduct Health & Safety inspections and student well-being checks as directed.
- Complete three 1:1 meetings with each assigned Care Team member during the semester.
- Exercise effective and ethical decision-making skills.
- Duty and Crisis - 15%
- Serve in an on-call rotation to address community needs.
- Respond to emergencies following protocol, including after hours if necessary.
- Support leadership in addressing policy violations.
- Encourage respectful community behavior and empower students to resolve issues.
- Make appropriate referrals to resources.
- Write incident reports promptly and accurately.
- Follow up with students in crisis or policy violations.
Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will have: 1-3 years of experience working with university students or young adults.
- BA/BS from an accredited college or university.
- Experience in mentorship roles.
- Valid driver's license and/or passport.
- Fluency in English.
- Effective communication skills with empathy and compassion.
- Ability to manage evolving priorities.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
